Your Story!
Ken Blase

Graduated from Assumption Grade School, Augustinian Academy and St. Louis University was the foundation for my future at 21 years.  I continued my studies of the piano, started in the fifth grade in schools in four cities.  Opportunities to be invited to play with three symphonies shows practicing is the only way to learn.  All pianists sound good with 100 instruments backing them up.

I moved from St. Louis to Nashville, TN in 1980 from being a clinical laboratory supervisor in a hospital, to become a medical instrument repair representative with DuPont.  I continued my education in chemistry, bio medical electronics and medicine, attaining graduate degrees in clinical chemistry and biomedical electronics in Nashville and Baltimore.  Traveling back to St. Louis was frequent for family, until my niece and nephews graduated from catholic grade and high schools.  Mary Mother Church parishoners saw me so much, they did not realize where I lived.
After carrying a beeper and cell phone for over 35 years, I decided to retire from being a Sr. Technical Consultant for a Medical Diagnostics Company the summer of 2017.

All of my opportunities to travel, was because of my first 8 years of catholic education. I was not allowed to slip through the cracks.

December 2013 had the chance to walk across part of the Iguazu Falls in Argentina.

I used a grant opportunity to be present at Pope John XXIII canonization in the Vatican in April 2014.

Every class I have ever taught, the students are reminded that they learn nothing from their successes, so make a mistake or two and get educated.

Volunteering activities has always kept me busy and it will continue to do so.

Performing as an amature magician at childrens hospitals over the past 25 years allows me to perform my best magic trick for them, it is returning the smiles to them which sometimes are lost while they are in the hospital.

1972-  Graduated from Lindbergh High School

College summers were waitressing at the Lake of the Ozarks spending all of my tip money on gas to go water skiing. Mastered the short slalom ski. Never mastered a graceful way to get off that thing though. BIG Splash

1972-  SEMO Fall semester

1973-  Spent 3 months in Brazil living with our senior year foreign exchange student. She is still a dear friend today thanks to social media and one reunion in Miami.
1974-  Commercial Art at Big Bend U, Meramec.

1977- SMSU BFA Graphic Design with a portfolio and no idea of what to do next. Moved home a few months then apartments, roommates and friends.

1985- Married Tom Hartweck, a North County man I met while snow skiing in Breckenridge, Colorado. Lived in Florissant, MO for 14 years, then moved to Fenton. Together we have 2 kids, single; 1 adult son & daughter & 4 grand kitties so for.

After working 8 years for 7UP Co. they up and left STL. Being 5 months pregnant my freelance design business happily was born. Over the years I worked in more art departments & ad agencies than I can remember. Often working in my own basement well into the night after a long day with the kids. Loved it all.

AFTER 911 and the Advertising industry in STL changed. I wanted to get away from staring at a computer and work with real live people. I tried a few thing things including:

Executive Secretary for VP of Some-Really-Big-Deal Inc. (no just kidding, never did that! I can’t type or spell to save my life. But my father always told me as a “girl” I needed those skills so I could always support myself. Sorry Dad)
Activities Assistant for Lutheran Senior Services (sad)
Custom Framing for small Fenton shop (I’m too short, that hurt my back and she closed the store suddenly one night…hummmm.)
Owner of We Do Home Staging home staging and redesign business (staging furniture 7 decor took over my basement, garage, finally my dining room. Yes I was officially teetering on hoarding.Yikes! Sold it all on Craig’s List) ((also hurt my back moving everyone’s stuff around))
Para-professional for Rockwood Special Ed Preschool (miss those kids, especially the non-verbal kiddos, but couldn’t handle the woman drama)

Now RETIRED, (mostly) PART TIME SELF EMPLOYED, (when I feel like it)

Certified Coach/Guide for Optavia creating heathy weight through heathy habits (because we all have bad habits, OK me too.)
Owner & Design Diva, Staging Help- home staging and design consultations for occupied homes. (Finally a creative job that doesn’t hurt my back…I will not move your couch! Get your kids to do that. And for heaven’s sake “Purge your STUFF”) Hugs!

Stay tuned…

Hi Everyone!  Still smiling when I think about seeing everyone, and how fun our reunion was.
I'm not very good at this but I'll give it a try.
I graduated from Lindbergh High School in 1972. Worked at Graphic World to learn Graphic Arts. until the end of 1975 when I moved to Houston with my parents where my dad was transferred.  Used my Graphic Art skills to complete a seasonal catalog for SAKS Fifth Ave.  Moved again with my parents when my dad was transferred to Kansas City, MO.  I loved it here, and stayed here when they moved to Omaha, Shreveport, St. Louis and then eventually they settled in KCMO too. I worked over 12 years for ChemLawn as Office Mgr. and Operations Mgr.  Worked for Boise Cascase in purchasing for 5 years. Dry Basement Company for 2 years as Operations Mgr. Currently employed at BCD Travel, a corporate travel agency, in accounting dept. for 22 years in October. I work from home now, which I enjoy, and plan to at least semi retire in the next couple years.  I'm single with no children, but I have a black kitty named Boo :).

Assumption Memories - Started in 1st Grade.

Favorite Teachers: Ms. Marshand, Ms. Joanne, Ms. Ernst, Sr. Mary Kathleen Dickherber, Sr. Sylvester

Least Favorite: Sr. Everista, Mr Forrest

Memories: Youngest and smallest boy in class, always felt I was trying to catch-up with everyone else (certainly the slowest runner! -- picked last or second last for recess or pick up soccer, football, basketball games) and often baffled - report card grades fell in the 'G' and 'H' range - with an occasional 'E', 'L' or 'U'.  1st or 2nd grade failed a spelling test of the numbers 10 to 20. Green spelling cards, spelling bees, times tables (6 x 9 = Car 54 where are you? - starring Fred Gwynne and Joe Ross), riding my bike to school, school uniforms, listening to KXOK to see if we had a snow day, walking home with Patricia Casso, walking home with Janet Scherrer, Mrs. Deere in the old school building cafeteria, the 'pee trough' for boys in the back of the old school building, painting and riding in a Steamboat Float for our class for the Assumption Picnic, Assumption Picnics (seemed a bigger event in the earlier years), passing the latin test to be a Mass server (5th Grade?), Mass server, Fr Little, Fr. Altoff (feared him), crossing guard,  on the 'sawdust team' to clean up puke, metal school pencil sharpeners, mechanical pencils, cartrige ink pens, Christmas decoration making for a delightful atmosphere in the old school cafeteria for christmas, church nativity scene (and advent candles), sitting at bench tables for lunch in the old school cafeteria, getting a basehit off Steve Ohmer, sitting behind Maralin Grigaitis one year, Valentines Day parties with 'cake walks', playing 'flips' with baseball cards at recess and before school, playing with toys and rocks under a big tree at recess, Sr. Everista's, Sr. Honoria's and Mr. Forrest's 'Board of Education' - boys getting punished with these in class, getting instruction to watch out for atomic bomb explosions, Sister leading class to pray for Fidel Castro, Sr. Estelle opening class with a prayer and asking for our intentions (one day we tried to see how long we could make it last!) watching the St. Louis Cardinals play the Boston Red Sox in the World Series during school, getting the highest score on the Iowa English test in 6th grade, getting caught by Fr. Altoff throwing dirt clods at the construction trailer for the new school, making $1 deposits at the Assumption Credit Union during school, being horrible at art, girls claiming the statue of Mary in the church was crying, kneeling at the communion rail, confirmation, daily mass 1st thing in the morning, fire alarm drills, buying girl scout cookie 'thin mints', using  Bic pens to shoot spitballs, smoking cigarettes at Jim Pikuls house, 'crying my way' onto Coach Pikul's soccer team, Coach Gillick teaching me to bat, ice cream after every game with Coach Hiese(?), Thanksgiving soccer 'mud'game, after school soccer and baseball practice, , 'getting away with' setting off the school fire alarm (Tom Reinhardt did it the next day, he didn't get away with it!), knocking Sr. Dickherber down in a game of pickle, Sr Honoria telling our (7th grade?) class 'we didn't have to be there' after receiving complaints from parents about Sr. Baptista (fell asleep in class, flourescent light fixtures began to smoke), scoring highly on the HS entrance exam for Vianney, awesome time at Jeannie Miller's graduation party.

Life after Assumption:

1968 - 1972 - Vianney HS  (admitted to honors program, then almost expelled my first year for poor academic performance, dropped from honors program, turned it around Sophomore year (thank God for Bro. Clinton Towers!) summer school at Mehlville to obtain credits for honors program graduation)

It was great seeing everyone at the reunion, but sad to see that we lost some alumni over the years. Like many of you, Dave Montana was a good friend. Mark Perlow was my best friend from Kindergarden to 4th Grade. He died of cancer in his 30s, leaving a wife and a couple of kids. Mark Stroble was a good guy as was Mark Kreitz. His family ran the bus service for Assumption and the Catholic High Schools.

1966-- Kennerly Elementary
1967-- Lindbergh Jr. High
1969 --Lindbergh High School
1972-76 Southeast Missouri State University

I worked after school and summers at Sunset Country Club as a caddy and then in the pro shop during most of high school. And as many may remember. I was alway on the shy side.

That changed in college. Although I majored in Art Education, I found journalism was to be my career. I started as a photographer my freshman year for the The Capaha Arrow newspaper. Became a reporter, managing editor, and finally editor in chief my senior year.

My first job out of school was at the Dexter Daily Statesmen/Messenger in the Bootheel, and then the Springfield News-Leader in Southwest, Mo.
By 1981, Gannette had taken over the paper and it lost its personality.

My dad, Ed Wilder, ran his own auto repair shop and I wanted nothing to do with it. But I ended up in the industry as editor of a national automotive trade  journal, then as a public relation manager for an automotive parts company before returning to the magazine in Springfield in 1990. I have been there ever since, and also taught photography in the continuing ed segment at Ozarks Community Technical College in the evenings for 20 years.

I accomplished a bucket-list wish last fall, publishing my first western novel, Terror Near Town. Several of you bought copies at the reunion and I thank you so much for your interest. I have been a fan of western TV shows, movies and history my entire life. The book is available on Amazon and I am working on a sequel. I have been experiencing muscle pain in one arm for several months and am being treated for it. But most of my typing is at work now, not on my novel. I plan to retire in January and hope my arm will improve and my book will be finished within the year.

Memories: Mrs. Thuston was my favorite teacher. She taught 3rd grade. I felt sorry for poor old Sister Baptista in 5th grade. I remember her wanting to play an album and forgot to put it on the record player. Instead she placed the needle on the felt of the turn table. She taught my cousin 7 years earlier at St. George parish and was ready for retirement then. But she was always kind to me.

It was great seeing you all.

I tried placing a photo. But it must have been too hi-rez. As a result, I had to start all over again. Will try to send to Pat and maybe he can place it.
